En inglés, los números cardinales (por ejemplo, «uno», «dos» o «tres») se refieren a cantidad, mientras que los números ordinales («primero», «segundo» o «tercero») se refieren a la distribución. Estos últimos se utilizan en fechas, fracciones y se emplean como adjetivos para describir la importancia, la posición en una lista y la ubicación en el tiempo. Generalmente, se crean agregando -th al final del número cardinal. Sin embargo, hay excepciones para los números uno (first), dos (second), tres (third), cinco (fifth), ocho (eighth), nueve (ninth) y doce (twelfth).
Definición de números cardinales
Como ya comentamos, los números que se pueden contar son los cardenales. Significa que todos los números naturales pertenecen a esta categoría. Por lo tanto, podemos escribir la lista de números cardinales como:

Definición de números ordinales
Los números ordinales son los números que denotan la posición de algo. Si se mencionan varios objetos en una lista, el orden de los objetos se define mediante números ordinales. Los términos adjetivos que se utilizan para denotar el orden de algo son 1º, 2º, 3º, 4º, 5º, 6º, y así sucesivamente.

Cómo se forman los números ordinales
- Agregue th al número cardinal para formar el número ordinal: six → sixth
- Agregue las dos últimas letras de la palabra escrita a la figura. → 4th
- Números en palabras: Los números ordinales 1st → first, 2nd → second y 3rd → third son irregulares. Tenga cuidado con la ortografía de las palabras 5th, 8th, 9th, 12th y las palabras que terminan en -y.
Fracciones
Usa el número ordinal para el denominador:
- 1/3 → one third
- 2 3/5 → two and three fifths
Excepciones:
- 1/2 → one half
- 1/4 → one quarter
Decimales
Usa el número cardinal para decimales:
- 3.8 → three point eight
- 4.25 → four point two five
Números romanos
Rara vez se utilizan números romanos. Ejemplo de ellos se sitúan en los nombres de reyes y reinas. Ejemplos:
- Elisabeth II → Elisabeth the Second
- Luis XIV → Louis the Fourteenth
